CASE STUDIES
How We Built Page-One Visibility Without Keyword Stuffing

PROJECT DETAILS:
- How We Built Page-One Visibility Without Keyword Stuffing
- Own Strategy
- SEO
- 2026
A live THRIVESENSE™ case study by Thrive Online.
When we began revising the Thrive Online website, the objective was not simply to add more keywords or produce more content.
We wanted the website to do a better job of explaining who we are, what we offer and why an ambitious business should choose us. At the same time, it needed to help search engines and AI platforms understand our services, areas of expertise and commercial relevance.
That meant working backwards from three questions:
- What services do we genuinely want to grow?
- What are potential customers searching for when they are considering an agency?
- What experience do they need when they arrive on the website?
The result was a deliberate combined SEO and GEO strategy focused on commercial intent, clear page purpose and strong user experience, not repetitive keyword-heavy copy.
This is not a finished success story. It is a live case study documenting the completion of phase one: how we established stronger site relevance and commercially valuable rankings, and what must happen next to turn those rankings into greater visibility, traffic and qualified opportunities.
THE STARTING POINT
Like many businesses looking for the next step or commercial positioning, Thrive Online’s website had developed over time, but its pages did not fully reflect the agency we had become.
Our services had expanded. Our team and delivery capabilities had grown. We were working with businesses across the UK and international markets, but the website did not clearly connect our proposition, services, experience and commercial outcomes.
There was also a strategic SEO challenge.
We wanted to build stronger rankings for commercially valuable searches such as:
- Digital marketing agency Nottingham
- Digital agency Nottingham
- Nottingham digital agency
- B2B digital agency Nottingham
- Web design agency Nottingham
- PPC agency Nottingham
- SEO agency Nottingham
Many of these searches are highly competitive, and as we are a digital marketing agency, we are competing with businesses that know how to rank. These terms are also far more commercially relevant than attracting large volumes of visitors through broad informational content with little likelihood of generating an enquiry. The goal was therefore not simply to increase the number of keywords the website ranked for; it was to rank for the right keywords.
REBUILDING THE WEBSITE AROUND INTENT
The main website revision programme began in February 2026.
The homepage, About page, Services area and core service pages were progressively reviewed and rebuilt during the following months. The dedicated THRIVESENSE™ page was then introduced in July as the formal expression of the methodology behind the work.
We purposefully chose not to begin with a list of keywords, but instead started with the commercial purpose of each page.
BUSINESS SENSE:
We identified the services and opportunities that mattered commercially.
The homepage needed to establish Thrive Online as a senior-led, full-service digital agency, while the individual service pages needed to support more specialist searches around website development, SEO, PPC and digital creative services.
This prevented the SEO strategy from becoming disconnected from what the business actually wanted to sell.
SEARCH SENSE:
We grouped related searches around clear page themes rather than creating a separate page for every slight variation.
For example, terms such as “digital agency Nottingham”, “Nottingham digital agency” and “digital marketing agency Nottingham” reflect broadly the same underlying requirement and at this stage of the project did not need separate landing pages.
Instead, the homepage needed sufficient relevance and authority to compete across that connected group of searches, while specialist terms such as “PPC agency Nottingham” and “web design agency Nottingham” should increasingly be owned by their respective service pages.
USER SENSE:
The website still had to read naturally.
A prospective client does not want to encounter the phrase “digital marketing agency Nottingham” repeatedly throughout every section. They want to quickly understand:
- What the agency does
- Whether it understands their needs
- What makes its approach different
- Whether it has relevant experience
- What results it can help deliver
The copy therefore remained proposition-led, concise and commercially focused, with target search language introduced where it added clarity rather than where it merely increased repetition.
TECHNICAL SENSE:
The content work was supported by improvements to the wider search foundation, including:
- Page structure and heading hierarchy
- Internal linking
- Metadata and page targeting
- Website technical performance
- Clearer service architecture
- Stronger connections between services, case studies and supporting content
These elements helped search engines interpret the website as a connected digital ecosystem rather than a collection of unrelated pages.
WHAT HAPPENED DURING PHASE ONE?
The results show encouraging progress, although they also demonstrate how much opportunity remains.
Current Semrush reporting identifies an increase of over 100% in ranking organic keywords associated with the Thrive Online website since the project began and estimates a 127% increase in monthly organic traffic.
More importantly, the tracked keyword set now contains more than a dozen page-one rankings across commercially relevant, geo-targeted, medium-to-high keyword difficulty searches.
Examples include:
- Digital marketing agency Nottingham
- Digital agency Nottingham
- Nottingham digital agency
- Digital marketing services Nottingham
- International digital agency Nottingham
- B2B digital agency Nottingham
- Specialist digital agency Nottingham
- Full-service digital agency Nottingham
- Online marketing Nottingham
Several of these terms have medium-to-high levels of competition, meaning the website has not simply accumulated rankings for low-value or highly obscure searches.
Semrush also categorises approximately 47% of the website’s ranking keywords as commercially focused. This is significant because it suggests the growing organic footprint is closely connected to users researching services and potential suppliers, rather than being dominated by unrelated informational traffic.
The longer-term trend shows a wider organic footprint and stronger estimated traffic than the website held at the beginning of 2026. Referring domains have also increased by 115% since January.
Early AI search visibility is beginning to emerge as well, with Semrush recording multiple mentions and cited pages across the AI platforms included in its reporting.
WHY IS OVERALL VISIBILITY STILL ONLY 2.06%?
This is where an honest interpretation matters.
A page-one ranking does not automatically produce strong visibility.
Many of the priority, high-intent, high-difficulty keywords currently sit between positions five and ten. These are valuable rankings and provide a strong foundation, but the majority of organic clicks are concentrated within the first few search results.
The website has therefore established commercial relevance without yet achieving dominance.
A visibility score of 2.06% is not a result we would present as the completion of the strategy. It shows that the first phase has worked in establishing a platform and focused presence, but the larger commercial opportunity still lies ahead.
The distinction is important:
Phase one was about earning page-one relevance. Phase two is about turning that relevance into top-three visibility.
WHY WE DID NOT PURSUE TRAFFIC AT ANY COST
It would have been possible to build a larger volume of content around broad digital marketing questions.
That may have increased the total number of ranking keywords and created a more impressive traffic graph. It would not necessarily have attracted businesses actively considering a new digital agency, website partner, SEO provider or PPC specialist.
Our priority was to build relevance around searches that could realistically contribute to commercial growth. That means a visitor searching for “digital marketing agency Nottingham” may be more valuable than dozens of visitors arriving through a loosely related educational article.
Traffic matters to us, but context matters more. The objective is not to attract everybody. It is to become visible to the right potential customers at the right point in their decision-making process.
WHAT PHASE TWO WILL INVOLVE
The next phase is more demanding, and this is where the focused work to build authority and improve visibility begins.
Moving a keyword from position 50 to position 10 can sometimes be achieved through clearer page relevance and stronger website structure. Moving from position 7 to position 2 usually requires a broader combination of content quality, authority, trust and external validation.
Our priorities now include:
✅ Full website structure and sitemap planning
✅ Strengthening page ownership
✅ Building greater authority
✅ Expanding commercial proof
✅ Developing connected content
✅ Deepening the structure of the website
✅ Enriching, without overloading, the copy throughout the website
MEASURING BUSINESS OUTCOMES
Rankings and visibility are useful indicators, but they are not the final measure of success.
Phase two will place greater emphasis on verified Google Analytics and Search Console data, alongside organic enquiries, qualified opportunities and the commercial value generated through search.
WHAT THIS CASE STUDY DEMONSTRATES
Keyword use alone does not constitute a complete SEO strategy. This case study demonstrates that keywords are most effective when they are supported by clear business purpose, strong page structure, relevant content and a website experience designed around the user.
We did not ignore SEO to protect the design and copy. We integrated SEO into the wider digital strategy.
That is the thinking behind THRIVESENSE™: aligning business objectives, user experience, search visibility and technical performance within one connected methodology.
The first phase has established a meaningful spread of page-one rankings across searches that matter to the business. The next challenge is to earn the authority required to move those rankings into the top three and convert increased visibility into measurable commercial growth.
IS YOUR WEBSITE RANKING FOR THE RIGHT SEARCHES?:
A website can attract traffic without generating meaningful opportunities. It can also offer excellent services while remaining largely invisible to the businesses searching for them.
A THRIVESENSE™ Digital Growth Review examines how your website, SEO, user experience, technical performance and commercial priorities work together and identifies where stronger alignment could produce better results.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a website rank well without keyword stuffing?
Yes. Search visibility is built through clear page purpose, relevant content, strong website structure and genuine alignment with search intent, not by repeating the same keyword unnaturally. Thrive Online introduced target search language where it helped users and search engines understand each page, while keeping the copy concise and commercially focused.
Why can a website rank in the top 10 but still have low search visibility?
A top-10 ranking only means the website appears somewhere on the first page of search results. Keywords ranking between positions five and ten generally receive a much smaller share of clicks than those in the top three, so a website can have several page-one rankings while its overall visibility remains relatively low.
Is reaching page one enough for a successful SEO strategy?
Page-one rankings are an important milestone, but they are not the final objective. Phase one establishes relevance and gives the website a platform to compete; the next stage is moving the most commercially valuable keywords into the top three and converting that visibility into enquiries and revenue.
What is commercial search intent?
Commercial search intent describes searches made by people who are actively researching a service, supplier or potential purchase. Terms such as “digital marketing agency Nottingham”, “SEO agency Nottingham” and “PPC agency Nottingham” are commercially valuable because the person searching may already be considering appointing an agency.
How did Thrive Online improve rankings for competitive agency searches?
Thrive Online worked backwards from the services it wanted to grow, the searches potential clients were making and the experience users needed when they reached the website. The site was then restructured around clear page ownership, connected keyword themes, commercial relevance and stronger links between services, case studies and supporting content.
What is the difference between SEO and GEO?
SEO improves visibility within traditional search-engine results, while GEO helps content become understandable, trustworthy and citable within AI-generated answers and recommendations. Both rely on clear subject expertise, structured information, credible evidence and content that answers genuine customer questions.
How does THRIVESENSE™ support SEO and GEO?
THRIVESENSE™ brings together business objectives, user experience, search visibility and technical performance within one connected methodology. It helps ensure that content is useful to people, understandable to search and AI engines, and aligned with measurable commercial goals.
What helps move a keyword from positions four to ten into the top three?
Moving into the top three normally requires more than adding extra copy. It can depend on stronger page relevance, better internal linking, greater topical depth, credible case studies, external authority, high-quality backlinks and clear evidence that the business can deliver the service being searched for.
Should SEO focus on traffic or qualified opportunities?
Traffic matters, but it should not be pursued at the expense of commercial relevance. A smaller number of visitors searching for a specific service may create more value than a much larger audience arriving through loosely related informational content.
How should the commercial success of SEO be measured?
Rankings, keyword numbers and visibility are useful progress indicators, but they are not the final measure of success. A complete SEO assessment should also consider Google Search Console clicks, organic users, qualified enquiries, conversion rates, sales opportunities and the commercial value generated through search.
